James Turrell turns 70

When James’ grandmother first brought him to their Quaker meeting, he asked her what he should do.  “Just wait,” she said. “We’re going inside to meet the light.”

James turns 70 this year.  He has spent him life creating art that brings the cosmos closer.  Exhibitions at LACMA and the Guggenheim and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. This older but lovely little video shows him plotting ways to gather starlight. And here’s The New Yorker’s art critic on the Guggenheim show: “[It] hits an unchanging sweet spot of what we want from a museum: a place where we can go en masse and be alone.”
